Little Jimmy Dickens Hillbilly Fever - Little Jimmy Dickens, famous for his humorous novelty songs, his small size, 4'11" (150 cm), and his rhinestone-studded outfits had a huge hit with this song. It reached number 3 on the country charts.

Perry Como - Hoop-Dee-Doo - was recorded on March 16, 1950. It first reached the Best Seller chart on April 21, 1950 and lasted 17 weeks on the chart, peaking at #4.

Spike Jones And His City Slickers - Chinese Mule Train - is a parody of the popular song Mule Train. Spike would often send up songs and was a very funny man!

March 1950

Doris Day - I Said My Pajamas - recorded on January 13, 1950. It first reached the chart on March 10, 1950 and lasted 1 week on the chart, at #27.

Georgia Gibbs - If I Knew You Were Coming - The recording was made on February 16, 1950. The record first reached the charts on March 17, 1950 and lasted six weeks on the chart, peaking at #21.

Hank Williams - Long Gone Lonesome Blues - The song was Hanks' second number one on the Country & Western chart. It stayed on the charts for twenty-one weeks, with five weeks at the top of the Country & Western chart. The B-side of the song, entitled, "My Son Calls Another Man Daddy" peaked at number nine on the Country and Western chart.

FEBRUARY 1950

Teresa Brewer-Music! Music! Music! - The biggest-selling version of the song. It entered the charts February 1950 and became a number one and million seller!

Peppermint Harris Raining In My Heart - Peppermint Came out of Texas and was good friends with Lightin' Hopkins. He orginally recorded under the name of Peppermint Nelson but the record company allegidly forgot his name on this recording and he became Peppermint Harris.

Mills Brothers - Daddy's Little Girl - A great song associated with weddings as the bride dances with her father. Words and music by Bobby Burke and Horace Gerlach.

Hi and welcome to Pick of the Hits blog #1. Come with me on a musical journey that spans well over 60 years in the history of popular music. I've worked in the music industry for over 20 years so you can imagine I have a very vast collection of music dating back to 1950. Every few days, I'm going to take a month and share with you some of the most popular and sometimes weird and obscure hits of that time. Not only that, I'll even show you where you can buy these songs legally and add them to your own collection! Feel free to share your memories and post a comment.The history of popular recorded music dates right back to 1890 but I've chosen to start from 1950. So let's jump in our time machine and head back to the 50s - the birth of rock & roll!

JANUARY 1950

The Ames Brothers - Ragg Mopp - The song was part of a double-sided hit; the flip side was "Sentimental Me" .The record first reached the charts on January 6, 1950 and lasted 14 weeks on the chart, peaking at #1

Danny Kaye - I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts - The song became Danny's only hit on the American music charts. The song is still played to this day at Cambridge United Football matches after a home win!

Red Foley - Chattanoogie Shoe-Shine Boy - Red's version of this song was a huge hit. The record first charted on January 13, 1950 and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, peaking at number one. It also went to number one on the country charts and stayed at the top spot for three months.
